The ultimate goal of alchemy; The Quintessence fuels the transcendent metamorphosis of the soul which is the ultimate goal of alchemy.
The liberation of the Quintessence from the substance under investigation is the immediate goal of many alchemical procedures. The Quintessence is a manifestation of concentrated vital life force or vital energy. The Quintessence fuels the transcendent metamorphosis of the soul which is the ultimate goal of alchemy. To this end the adepts always proceeded in the same manner: solvite corpora et coagulate spiritum: dissolve the body and coagulate the spirit.

Earth and water are fixed elements that draw down. Air and fire are volatile elements that rise up. Within the constellation of the four Elements a fifth is hidden. It is called the Quinta Essentia or Quintessence. It permeates the whole of creation. The Quinta Essentia is the force that binds everything, the foundation without which the Elements would be dead matter. It is the spiritual core of all things and, according to Paracelsus, the extract of the Elements, that is, their incorruptible eternal substratum. As such it is simultaneously the origin and the goal of all evolution. The Quinta Essentia is the cohesive force of all living creatures and all existing things.
Heaven and earth are interrelated. Earth is created in the image of heaven. If we discover God’s system in creating our world, we are free to reorganize that world! Separate earth from fire, and the fine from the coarse. If we distill the heart of the matter, the essence from the matter itself, and extract this inner soul of the metal, we can also make it grow and multiply. But we must do it “gently and with great sagacity.”

The three aspects of universal wisdom are sun, moon, and man’s ingenuity. Democrit, in Physics et Mystica, discloses that the key is “a stone which carries within itself the seeds of the two precious metals, capable of reproducing them, called the philosopher’s stone.” As you refine base metal until it emerges pure gold, so you purify souls until they reach perfection. As the secrets of the retort are handed down from adept to adept, so the inner meanings of alchemy are passed on from priest to priest in a hermetic chain that permits no outsiders. The vessel being hermetically sealed may well be us.

Gold is a living thing containing a seed. By using certain medicines, the seed can be made to grow. That medicine is the elixir or philosopher’s stone. The process is relatively simple: the stone is projected, that is, brought in contact with a base substance. Every metal is only a different version of the “prime matter,” which contains the philosopher’s stone. One need only find the prime matter, and extract the philosopher’s stone from it.
The quest of the alchemist was to find the original prima materia, the pure form of mercury, the original water of creation. This pure mercury was believed to be the one unchanging substance that was the origin of all life, the manifestation of God in matter which constituted the philosopher’s stone.

Aristotle held that the universe consisted of four basic elements: fire, water, air, and earth. Adepts call them the (our essences, and added a fifth: quinta essentia, the quintessence or elixir, the philosopher’s stone. Each of the four elements has two basic characteristics, moisture and heat. Fire is hot and dry, earth cold and dry, water cold and moist, and air hot and moist. One of the two basic characteristics is more dominant than the other. In earth dryness represents the characteristic attribute, with water it is coldness, with air moisture, and with fire, heat. In addition to the dominant character, each element contains a second aspect. When one of the secondary aspects is changed, then the element is transmuted into another element.

Consider fire, whose dominant character is heat. It can lose its dryness in exchange for moisture and turn into steam. Air is predominantly moist. If it loses heat and takes on cold, water will result by condensation. Water, a cold element, loses its liquid state and turns into “earth,” that is, solid ice. When earth, characterized by dryness, loses its secondary aspect of coldness, it becomes fire. Dry spells cause fires, and solid bodies turn into smoke through the presence of fire. This system also works the other way around. When earth loses its dry condition, it becomes water.
When coldness is extracted from water, the result is air, the liquid evaporates. When air loses its moisture, fire can result. Only the form changes. Matter remains immutable.

When Rudolf first read of these things. Aristotle’s principles were still the basis of alchemy. The adepts felt, however, that prime matter could be changed from one state to another by two major principles. sulfur and mercury, and that all metals were composed of those two. Sulfur relates to firr, gold, and the sun. mercury to water, silver, and the moon. The sun is male, the moon, female. In the secret philosophy of the adepts, sulfur corresponds to the mind, mercury to the soul; but a third element, body, was to be found in salt, also relating to earth.

Symbols must be used in describing the great task, lest outsiders learn the inner WIPES. A dragon signifies quicksilver. But the spiritual essence of quicksilver is needed to proceed with the -great work.” the metal must Pose its nature with the help of the green dragon, aqua regis, a powerful liquid, the royal water, which dissolves even gold! In the hermetic egg, the retort, the great work takes place. Many steps lead to it.

First, incineration of the metal mercury in the presence of oxygen, to obtain apowder from that metal.

The second step is called the decay. Lead is purified through the destruction of its normal state. What remains behind in the vessel is like the soul at death of the body.

Third, evaporation or refinement, in which a solid is extracted from a retort through the process of evaporation. However, the apparatus must be arranged in such a way that the substance solidifies again on the other end.
Fourth. the solution consists of the amalgamation of silver or gold in the presence of mercury, through smelting.

Fifth, in distillation, a liquid is turned into steam in the retort, and then condensed by cooling. By a continuous process of evaporation and condensation of the substance in a sealed vessel, the substance is purified.
In the sixth step, solidification, or fixation, a liquid is turned into a solid: sulfur is brought together with liquid mercury and turned into cinnabar. Fusion of the spiritually accented sulfur with spiritually activated mercury is like a mystical wedding. symbolic of the fusion of male and female, without which the great work cannot be accomplished.

The seventh step extraction, concerns the astrological conditions of the experiment. But the seven basic chemical steps are only part of the process by which the great work is attained. There are five more stages. Digestion means a solid body Is being dissolved in liquid. Separation softens a solid body to pliable state, and in the tenth stage, fermentation. the substance is prepared for the final two processes, multiplication and projection. Multiplication is transmutation of a base metal into a precious metal, while increasing its amount. Application of the tincture or elixir to base metal results not in an identical amount of precious metal, but in more.
Finally, projection is the ultimate step by which base metal is turned into solid gold, or in spiritual terms the soul becomes one with the divine principle. Once the great work is accomplished, the philosopher’s stone vanishes. It is no longer required. When man attains ultimate knowledge. he leaves earth behind. Gold returns to the earth, recommencing the cycle in the material dimension. Man’s -immortal essence returns whence it came, to be reborn again, recast in another form: an eternal life cycle in which there is neither beginning nor end.

Sulphur’s corporeal earthly and occult powers identified it with the chthonic pulses of the earth, of nature, and it was represented by the dragon, a creature without beginning or end. It was also identified with the colour green, the colour of procreation and life (the green sun or green bird according to Micreris in Tractatus Micreris suo discipulo Mimefindor° As the spirit of nature, a Lucifer fallen from heaven into earthly fate, sulphur was at the heart of all things, yearning for reconciliation with his sister mercury, to unite the head and tail and bring together the conscious and the unconscious.

Alchemy presented its practitioners with the exciting prospect of witnessing through experimental science the mysteries of creation and the eternal struggle between good and evil, God and the devil, and the spirit with nature. The conflict between mercury and sulphur was seen to be crucial to understanding the laws of nature and therefore a necessary precondition for the existence of life in the corporeal material world.
Knowledge of both of these forces was believed to be necessary for the widening of consciousness. For Petrus Bonus, John Doubelay and the author of the Secrete secretorumIS the key symbol that represented the importance of this marriage of two opposites as the principle of life was the egg. hatched by the bird of Hermes (Phoenix) under the heat of the sun. The egg, the origin of life, consisted of the white, watery albumen (the impure mercury) and the yellow, oily yolk (impure sulphur).

Mercury, containing within itself whiteness and yellowness, was the primal egg and gold, consisting of the yellowness of sulphur and the silver whiteness of mercury, hinted at this original divine force. Tihe primal egg. composed of these inseparable opposites, was the underlying symbol for the central dictum of alchemy from The Emerald Table: ‘That which is within is that which is without’.

The philosopher’s mercury, the original prime matter and the world egg, was the mysterious grail-like object of the alchemist’s quest and it remained an elusive chimera. If the pearl represented the unsullied spirit and purity of the original heavenly mercury, the divine, then gold was the one substance that partook of the fall of nature yet evoked the original purity of mercury: in its durability it resembled the pearl or mercury and in its redness, and its gestation through fire and warmth it represented the fallen incarnate sulphur.

Under the steady and profound warming influence of the sun within the womb of the earth it was believed that mercury evolved through six stages of ascending perfection, represented by the six metals of lead, iron, copper, mercury bronze and silver, to an amalgam of a more purified mercury and sulphur that created gold, a beautiful precious metal that in its purity and radiance provided a glimpse of the qualities of the divine mercury, which, if it could be procured, could be used to create gold: any metal exposed to the primal force would take the form of the original material, water, that was the philosopher’s mercury.

This marriage between mercury and sulphur (both sources of natural heat), which gave form to the mercury from which all life sprang, could be witnessed in nature in the interplay of night and day, the dialogue between the mercurial moon and the sulphurous sun, a daily drama of the coming to form and light of the maternal waters of creation.

The Secreta secretorum defined the philosopher’s stone as two stones, white and red, which emerged from the Mediterranean Sea and worked in tandem, mercury (the moon) sinking into the water as the sun rises, maintaining a balance and harmony of opposites. The sun (sulphur) was identified with light and the land, the moon (mercury) with darkness and the ocean; but as the ocean is vaster than the lands, so the prime mover was not the sun but the moon (mercury) whose element is water.” John Dastin in his dream vision celebrated a marriage between the sun (sulphur) and the moon (mercury) when during the time of Aries when the spirit of life is inspired

Alchemy was therefore a meditation on a holistic world in which water and sun between them generated life. According to Doubelay, the marriage between mercury, the mother of all things, and the masculine sulphur, brought forth the multiplication of fruit on earth.

Although Arne Saknussemm is a fictional character invented by Verne, the theme of a hollow Earth can be found in genuine alchemical writings. In a book named Azoth, published in 1613 and attributed to the mysterious German alchemist Basil Valentine, there are a number of complex symbolic emblems. One of these (see plate 7) shows a bearded face at the center of a seven-pointed star. Between each of the points of this star are words making up an inscription in Latin (VITRIOL). when translated it reads, “Visit the interior of the Earth, by rectifying you discover the hidden stone.”
The hidden stone is the philosopher’s stone—the mystical goal of the alchemist. By this time the medieval idea that the interior of the Earth was the location of hell had clearly been replaced, at least among alchemists and like-minded mystics. Guillaume Postel (who, as has been said, was an important influence on Johannes Bureus) suggested that in order to make paradise inaccessible to mankind God had hidden it beneath the North Pole. Thus the ancient myth of Hyperborea, the earthly northern paradise, returned to European consciousness. Could it be that Verne was aware of these mystical beliefs that were current around the time his invented alchemist Arne Saknussemm was said to have flourished?

From the book “The Philosopher’s Stone: Alchemy and the Secret Research for Exotic Matter” (p. 64) by Joseph Farrell you can read;
An intriguing story comes out of eighteenth-century Sweden, when the Scandinavian kingdom was at the height of her power. In 1705 the Swedish general Paykhull
“had been convicted of treason and sentenced to death. In an attempt to avert this punishment, he offered the king, Charles XII, a million crowns of gold annually, saying that he could make it alchemically; he claimed to have received the secret from a Polish officer named Lubinski, who had himself obtained it from a Corinthian priest. Charles accepted the offer, and a preliminary test was arranged under the supervision of a British officer, General Hamilton of the Royal Artillery, as an independent observer. All the materials were prepared with great care, in order to prevent the possibility of fraud, then Paykhull added his elixir and a little lead, and a mass of gold resulted which was coined into 147 ducats. A medal struck at the same time bore the inscription (in Latin as usual): (O.A. von Paykhull cast this gold by chemical art in Stockholm, 1706.”

One has difficulty imagining any alchemical process as being successful. But equally, one has difficulty imagining any king, especially King Charles XII, and a British artillery general, being taken in by a charlatan, especially when the charlatan is on trial for his life, and when Charles XII had potential riches to gain. The Swedish royal courtesans and ministers would have literally hovered over General von Paykhull, scrutinizing his every move (Holmyard, Alchemy,pp, 132-133)

The Energies Science has yet to understand what we could call the ‘other energies.’ Throughout this work, these energies will be mentlooed by the various names we are more familiar with. These energies–or let’s say, ‘this energy,’ can be operated at great distance without any ‘grounding’ actions by physical bodies. It can even be reflected by mirrors and transported, concentrated, and increased by sound. The mystics referred to this other energy as ‘life tree,’ and ‘Prana.’ Eeman called it the X force. Reichenbach called it ‘Odic Force, Paracelsus called it mumia,’ and the ancient referred to it in various ways as the ‘binding force.’ Frankly. I suspect it it all a part of Mind.

Recent discoveries prove that the atom is not solid. Instead, it is energy. Everything around us and inside of us is made up of energy, of frequencies, sounds, light, etc. Even our bones and our flesh are all energy. To read more on this, I suggest you read David Icke’s book Infinite Love Is the Only Truth, Everything Else Is Illusion. In this book, David points out evidence that what we perceive is an illusion of our superholographic brain. The elite knew this, including Napolean Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich and The Science of Getting Rich. They knew that our thoughts shape our reality and that our brain is a radio receiver and transmitter projecting our feelings out into the universe. What we project, we get.

The Lemurians knew this, as well as the Atlanteans, who were another group who fled from the destruction of Lemuria to Atlantis for their safety. Atlantis fell several thousand years later due to alchemical, powerful scientific technology of genetic manipulation and engineering of the human species and extraterrestrial genes, which Michael Tsarion discusses in his book Atlantis, Alien Visitation and Genetic Manipulation. During the later years of Atlantis, a race known as the Annunaki, an extraterrestrial race from the star system of Draco, colonized our planet earth. These are the designers of our banking system, religions, education, health care—and creators of money.

Geological findings show that there have probably been quite a few “Atlantises.” For our purposes, Atlantis is a metaphor, a symbol of alchemical Art. The true Atlantis is inside you, as it is inside us all. It is a spiritual memory, of what the Qabalah calls the Supernal Eden. Tales of the sunken land lost beneath the dark sea are stories and myths that break upon the shores of our surface minds. Atlantis is the shadow-place, yet also the birthplace of civilization. It is that fair land in the West where gods walked with humanity. It is now lost to us, but remains forever reachable. Atlantis is the true birthplace and true goal. It is Ruta, Lyonesse, Avalon, the Jerusalem on high, and Hy-Brasil. It is the sacred mountain crowned with the City of the Golden Gates, the birthplace of the wisdom teachers, of Hermes, Melchizadek, Osiris, Merlin, and Quetzalcoatl.

The construction of the Great Pyramids is the legacy of the Atlanteans, which was an extension of the Lemurian civilization that existed on Earth over four million years ago. In esoteric traditions, the Atlanteans are viewed as supreme beings who were much more evolved than humans are today. The real secret of pharaonic Egypt, from which Freemasonry purportedly arose, is the attainment of the light body, from which the word Illuminati” derives.

This would be the highest teaching conferred upon initiates in the King’s Chamber, an enigmatic room located deep inside the Great Pyramid. This esoteric knowledge was introduced from Egypt by Moses into Judaism. It was later recorded on the copper scrolls presumably hidden beneath the Temple in Jerusalem, and uncovered centuries later by the Knights Templar, who also incorporated sacred geometry into their buildings. Another expression of sacred geometry is the sort of shadow cast by the second pyramid (the Pyramid of Khafre) upon the Great Pyramid at sunset on December 21 every year.

The winter solstice shadow actually forms a golden triangle when truncated by the vertical line running up the middle of the south face of the Great Pyramid, and lining up with a purposeful indentation of a few inches in the construction of the side of the pyramid. This apothegm, as geometers call such vertical lines, forms a right angle and transforms the solstice shadow into a perfect Golden Triangle. Considering that this shadow is cast upon the Great Pyramid on each winter solstice to form “a perfect Golden Triangle” it can hardly have been a coincidence, and further illustrates that all three pyramids were built as part of a unified plan.

The Watchers and the World Before the Flood

‘Let him who created the strife be given up. “will cause him to suffer punishment. that ye shill rest undisturbed? The great gods. the Igigi’, answered him. Unto the King of the gods of heaven and of earth. the Prince of the gods, their lord (they said): ‘It was Kingu who created the strife, ‘Who made Tiamat to revolt, to join battle with thee? They bound him in fetters and brought him before Ea. They inflicted punishment on him, they let his blood. From his blood he (i.e.. Ea) fashioned mankind He laid on them the service of the gods. and he set the gods free. After Ea had fashioned man He laid the service of the gods upon him. For that work was beyond (human) comprehension. Ingeniously planned by Marduk and executed skilfully by Nudimmud (Ea). Marduk. the King of the gods, divided the gods.
He set the Anunnaki up on high and far down below. He set them as guard for Anu to protect his decrees. Three hundred he set in heaven to serve as guard. After, he decreed the ways of the earth. In heaven and in the earth six hundred gods did he assign. After he had issued the decrees And to the Anunnaki of the heaven and the earth given their allotments. The Anunnaki opened their mouths. They spake unto Marduk. their lord. (saying): O thou Lord who hast established our deliverance. ‘What benefit have we conferred upon thee?

Come. let us make a shrine, whose name shall be renowned: ‘A chamber for our nightly rest, let us take our ease therein. ‘Let us erect a shrine to serve as house for his throne. ‘On the day that we finish this we will take our ease therein? When Marduk heard these words. The features of his face shone brightly like the day. (He said). ‘Construct Babylon. the construction whereof ye desire ‘Let the bricks be moulded. fashion a splendid shrine? The Anunnaki worked the mould. They spent one year entire in making the necessary bricks. At the commencement of the second year They raised up the summit of Esagila. like unto the Apsu. They made the ziggurat of the Apsu: Unto Marduk. Enlil. Ea (shrines) they appointed as a dwelling. Before them he (Marduk) was seated majestically.’

In a work called “Secrets Of The Andes” mention is made of a large disc from ancient Lemuria which was used by the Incas In a sacred temple. If struck in a certain manner could supposedly cause earth-quakes, if tuned to an individual vibrational rate it could transport the person to a distant place. The Spanlards found this disc gone when they finally located the temple. In “Seth Speaks” there is some mention of the highly refined Lemurian sonar technology.

Four Philosophical Elements The union of the three Philosophical Principles appears to our senses as matter which manifests in four possible conditions or states. Alchemy views the four states of matter as the elemental states, earth, water, air and fire. Science views these conditions as states of matter, solid, liquid, gas and radiation (heat). The four alchemical Elements share certain properties that allow bits in the matter stream to combine into things occupying space through time. The properties are cold, moist, dry and hot. Fire is hot and dry; air is hot and moist; water is moist and cold; earth is cold and dry. Because of their dual qualities the elements can separate or intermingle.

Solar Plexus – planet Mercury

Ancient people called Mercury Boudha, a word with the same origins as Wodan and Odin (Odic Force and Mercury in the third Yellow chakra Solar Plexus)

Buddhi and Mercury correspond with each other, and both are yellow, or radiant and golden coloured.

Mercury the Wise was the “great instructor of mankind,” appropriate for a Buddha, who is considered a “world teacher.” Since “Budha” is Mercury, or Hermes, he is the Word. The historicized Budha becomes Buddha, as the historicized Logos becomes Christ.

All beings, conscious and unconscious arise of a twofold nature (lower and higher) of God, who is thus the origin and end of the whole universe.
Scriptures says; “I am the light of the world” – and this means the world soul or the enlighten universal mind.

The quest of the alchemist was to find the original prima materia, the pure form of mercury, the original water of creation. This pure mercury was believed to be the one unchanging substance that was the origin of all life, the manifestation of God in matter which constituted the philosopher’s stone.

And the meaning of VITROIL is; “Visit the interior of the Earth and by improving yourself you shall discover the hidden Philosophers’ Stone
The White Stone; and the Phoenix, symbolizing the Philosopher’s Stone
In the end of the process, the Red King or sulphur (or the phoenix) unites with the White Queen or mercury (or the eagle) in the alchemical wedding.
The eagles symbolize the alchemical mercury and the lion represents the alchemical sulfur.

The Eagle symbolizing Mercury

Mercury is the spirit, Sulfur is the soul

The Art, to couple them together and to lead them.

Psychologically, the principles of Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt form a triad of transformative powers that are available to us if we can learn to purify and control them.

Alchemy is the process of fusion of male and female – sulphur (a male and constant element), mercury (a female and volatile element)

Thoth was the Egyptian Mercury and The Egyptian Thoth, Thot, or Tot – (meaning the dog star)

The 10-petal lotus flower (Sanskrit: Manipura) is sometimes identified as the region of the navel and sometimes as the region of the solar plexus. A possible solution to this conundrum comes through Rudolf Steiner’s identification—of the location of the 10-petal lotus flower as the region of the “pit of the stomach,” which would seem to indicate the solar plexus (rather than the navel)

Thoth then revealed yet another level of meaning within the Caduceus: a symbolic representation of the nature of human consciousness itself, and another aspect of the key to alchemical transformation. The Greeks knew Thoth/Hermes/Mercury as the messenger of the other gods, a divine agent whose function was conveying “messages” between the divine and the human realms. As an archetype, Mercury is symbolic of the intellect, language, and mental functioning in general, as well as the faculty of speech.

The purpose of the brain (mercury) is to act as a bridge, a tool, between self-consciousness (sulphur) and the body (salt). The energies of the body are needed and useful, but they must be purified. If they are destroyed, then consciousness cannot manifest. If they dominate, then consciousness is dramatically reduced. The actions of mercury (mind-brain) must be to constantly unite these two expressions of energy. These attributes are meant to demonstrate that the physical body, when in harmony with the mental and emotional qualities of consciousness, becomes a living Philosophical Stone. They also give us keys for our meditations when working with the ideas surrounding the three essentials. These essentials have specific areas of concentration; however, each psychic center has its own “essentials.” For example, salt or matter is assigned to the stomach or navel. This means the psychic centers at and below the stomach are concerned with the material functions of the body. However, to carry this out, they also need energy (mercury) and specific intelligence or direction (sulphur).

The stomach is also the “Solar Plexus Brain” and this could the mind-brain of the Mercury

The “sixth sence” is also located in the stomach
And the stomach is storehouse of energy and mercury is energy
The Solar Plexus also symbolize the willpower
For instance, salt represents the body, mercury the mind, and sulphur the spirit.
Mercury is what perfects the “operation” of the sun.
Salt is the subconsiousness (Earth, body)
Salt is symbolized under the form of a Biblical stone. The stone as truth is the conclusion of reason, which ascends as truth from the subconsciousness to the conscious mind. Reason becomes the touchstone of truth.
The purpose of the brain (mercury) is to act as a bridge, a tool, between self-consciousness (sulphur) and the body (salt).

And the meaning of VITROIL is; “Visit the interior of the Earth and by improving yourself you shall discover the hidden Philosophers’ Stone
Scriptures says; “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (belly could be the (mercury) and the heart of earth the “salt” and “subconsciousness”.
Sulphur and salt serve as alpha and beta rays

The meaning of a bridge is the transformation process, the transformation process is the bridge from the physical to the spiritual, and this bridge is between the third and fourth chakra

Sulphur’s corrupting power was considered to be great: According to the Turba philosophorum a little sulphur powder was sufficient to consume a strong body, and sulphur was thought capable of blackening and consuming the sun with which it was closely associated (leading to the representation of sulphur as the green lion devouring the sun).
Sulphur was seen as the material manifestation of the spirit of Lucifer, a phosphorous light bringer manifested in the most beautiful star in the firmament down to the little bits of sulphurous tow that old men sold for lighting fires. Sulphur’s association with Lucifer meant it could be seen as a source of light and regeneration as well darker forces. Sulphur’s destructive energy could be seen in the use of sulphuric acids as corrosive agents, and it was also the basis for the manufacture of gunpowder, a mixture of charcoal, sulphur and saltpetre and potassium nitrate extracted from dung and lime.

The 3rd Solar Plexus is symbolic of the intellect and Mercury is symbolic of the intellect.
Since the Romans identified Odin with Mercury, an Odic force is Hermetic by definition, and the Odic Force can be found in the belly of man, and if the Odic Force and Mercury represents this energy, Mercury is located in the stomach of man.
There is another phase of power inherent in the Solar Plexus; which we shall merely mention here, yet we would fall short of that purpose were we to omit all reference to this additional power. This additional phase of power is that which, for want of a better name, may be called “Psychic Power.” By “Psychic Power” is meant that peculiar force, power, or energy which when manifested by human beings is called “Odic Force,” “Human Magnetism,” “Vril,” “Prana,” “GaLama,” etc. It is the force which underlies the manifestations known as “Personal Magnetism,” “Thought Force,” “Mind Power,” “Telepathy,
Red mercury is a modern version of that Red Tincture, or Powder, which is best known as lapis philosophorum, the Stone of the Philosophers. Almost as soon as the art of alchemy started in the twelfth century, it began to be rumoured that a miraculous substance, possibly a ‘stone’, had been manufactured with the power of turning base metal to gold. This was not such an outlandish idea as it seems to us. The medieval world-view held that everything possessed an innate disposition to perfect itself. Thus all the lesser metals, such as copper, tin and lead, were striving – we might say ‘evolving naturally’ -towards the incorruptible condition of gold. Like red mercury, then, the Philosophers’ Stone was only accelerating what was already a natural process in the base metal. By the same token, it was believed that the Stone was also the Elixir of Life, the universal panacea which accelerated our own innate growth towards perfection and bestowed immortaility.
Earth-evolution is seen in Mercury. Mercury is the star representing the directional force, the upward journey on which man must embark. Here I come to a point where a little secret, so to say, must be unveiled, one which may only be divulged at this point. The teachers of spiritual wisdom have always had what might be called a mask against those who would only have misused Spiritual Science, especially in bygone times. They did not express themselves directly, but presented something which was intended to conceal the true state of affairs. Now the esotericism of the Middle Ages knew only rather rough and ready measures and called Mercury Venus and Venus Mercury. In truth if we wish to speak esoterically, as the writer of the Apocalypse has done, we must speak of Mercury as the morning star. By the morning star he meant Mercury: I have given the direction upwards to thine ‘I’, to the morning star, to Mercury.
Revelation 2:28 says; Just as I received authority of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. I will give each of them the same power that my Father has given me.
Ancient people called Mercury Boudha, a word with the same origins as Wodan and Odin (Odic Force and Mercury in the third chakra Solar Plexus)
The planet Venus appears to have been referred to as a goddess of femininity by all ancient cultures. The Babylonians referred to Venus as Ishtar, and the Greeks identified Venus with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus is named for the Roman goddess who ruled love, beauty, and women.
Like Mercury, Venus was sometimes given two names. When Venus rose before the Sun as the Morning star, it was referred to has Eophorus or Lucifer (light barer). When Venus set after the Sun as the Evening star, it was referred to as Hesperus. Also like Mercury, by the time of the ancient Greeks, it was well established that Lucifer and Hesperus were the same planet.
